My hardwood floor is in bad shape; do I need to replace it or can I just have it sanded?
Most floors can be saved by sanding them. Some floors may have to have boards replaced.
How often should have my floor screen and coated?
Floors with less traffic on them, you could get away with a screen and coat every 5-7 years. Floors with heavy traffic (kids and dogs) may need them screen and coated every few years.
What is a screen and coat?
A screen and coat means to come in and just screen the old finish, so a new coat of finish can be applied.
How often should I have my floor sanded?
If you have your floor screen and coated every few years (depending on traffic), you may never have to sand it ever again. As long as the finish does not wear off.
What does it mean to have my floor sanded?
When a floor is sanded, it means to go all the way to the bare wood, taking all the old stain and finish off.
How many times can my floor be sanded?
At least 5 to 10 times, as long as it has not been to badly damaged.
There are cracks in my floor, why?
Dry air causes your wood to shrink and humidity makes your wood swell. The best way to keep your floor from cracking a lot is to keep the humidity the same in your house all year long.
Is there a way to get rid of the cracks in my floor?
The best way to get rid of the cracks is to keep the humidity levels in your house the same all year long. Another way is to have the floor filled with a wood putty and another coat of finish put on.
Can you refinish my floor in the winter time?
Yes, you can have your floors refinished any time of year.
Will my kitchen chairs scratch my floor?
The best way to keep furniture from scratching your floor, is have felt put on the feet of all furniture that moves, i.e..chairs, tables, sofas, ect....
Will my floor have a table top finish?
No, a table finish will not happen. We do every thing we can to put a clean finish on your floor, no house is dust free, and some dust will get into the finish. You cannot achieve a "clean room" finish in your home. The best way to get rid of it, is to simply walk on it. It will wear out with time.
Are high heels bad for my hardwood floor?
A female of 125 lbs wearing high heels will exert 110 lbs of pressure per square inch. The heels can dent the floor, especially ones in disrepair.
How can I clean my floors with out damaging them?
Use a solution of 1 gallon of water to a 1/4 of vineger with a slightly damp mop, or a wood cleaning kit, available in local stores. Avoid cleaners with oils or wax.
Will my dog scratch my floor with his nails?
Avoid having your dog running and sliding on the hardwood, minor scratches can be fixed with a screen and coat.
How long will it take to have my floor refinished?
Screen and coats are a one day process. Normally only 2 days to have it sanded and 2 coats of finish put on. If you are having a dark stain put on it may take up to 3 days.
How long will it take to install a new floor and have 2 coats of finish put on them?
A floor can take up to 2 days to install and another 2 days to sand and have 2 coats of finish put on. If you have a small area to be installed, it may only take 3 days for the whole process.
How bad are the fumes and how long does it take to dry?
The oil based polyurethane is very strong. It can take up 8-10 hours to dry, if the humidity is high, the dry time will increase. Water based finish is not strong at all. It will only take 2-4 hours to dry.
Is oil based or water based better?
That will depend on the customer's preference.

My floor has some water damage, can it be saved?
Minor water damage can be sanded once it is dry. If there is major water damage, some wood may have to be removed so the sub floor can dry completely and those boards replaced. If the wood is to wet for too long it could get moldy.
Do you put three coats of finish on my floor after it has been sanded?
Not right away. If you put three coats of finish on the floor back to back, you will end up with only 2 coats when it is all said and done. We suggest waiting at least 6 months. That will give the 2nd coat plenty of time to cure all the way. If you put the third coat on right after the second, you actually screen the second one off and then you are left with only 2 coats any way.
